In memory of a great friend, Ray Hendricks
This I believe is quite a story.
In April 2017 we were introduced to someone who now has become a dear friend, Joseph Mulwa, director of the Children’s Ministry Team [CMT}, based in Nairobi.
He took us to one of the many slum areas scattered around Nairobi , in which around 2.5 million people live representing 60% of Nairobi’s population, occupying just 6% of the city’s land. These are figures compiled in 2012 so the numbers of people will have increased significantly.
This was the first time Jan and I had visited the slums and we found it quite shocking.
We were invited to look around a small school called “Greater Love” in the middle of one of these areas called Kawangware.
It was a small school seeking to educate around 120 of the local children without any outside support. Since January Source of Hope has been involved in supporting this school, which on our website we have documented through this year.
In January on one of our visits to Kenya, three of us carried around 1000 children’s books. This was possible firstly by the generosity of the children from Hesketh Bank, but also British Airways offer to let us carry an extra 23 Kg bag each.
As a tribute to Ray Hendricks, his wife Donna and their family provided a sum of money to extend the property and build a small library. Inside the building the walls were lined, bookcases built, and it became a haven of peace in a very noisy area. The children love it, helping both their reading, understanding and what really excited us was that it fired their imagination; this improvement was also transferred to other subjects.
No longer did they have to share a book between many, but when it’s their turn to spend time in the library, they have books galore! Education is important to seek and break the grip of poverty and give them an opportunity to make something of their lives.
