Mary’s Slum School

Mary Lucy Slum School in Korogocho

Our visit to the Mary Lucy centre was so humbling. It was just a small school in the middle of a large area called Korogocho. We have visited Mary several times, as she is part of the “Children’s Ministry Team” (CMT) . The school covers a very small area but gives hope for upwards to 200 children. With 7 part time teachers, she works tirelessly to offer an education to children who otherwise would be excluded. Children are supposed to pay a small sum to attend, but the truth is no child is turned away.

The building is in terrible condition and it’s a battle to keep the rain out in the wet season.

The charity began a monthly grant in January to Mary, to support her in her ministry. Both Mary and the part time teachers who work with her are excellent at what they do, and they are justly proud of the fact that results from the year end exams put the school high in the published exam results.

On our visit in September we were told of the opportunity to resite the school to a property next door to the existing school. This building is in much better condition, it has 12 classrooms and would be ideal to consolidate Mary’s work.

The pictures and videos show the passion that those teachers bring to give those children a chance to break the circle of poverty they find themselves in. We would love to find the money to take this school to larger and much-improved premises. If funds were available we would be thrilled to be involved with this move

Mary receives a donation of around £230 each month that works out at just over £12 each year for each child. The new building would cost around £7900 to buy, and no rates would be required or ground rent. This would mean she has no longer rent to pay of £80 each month. It’s on our prayer list, and we believe that if we can find a donor or donors to support Mary, the lives of those children and those coming after them will be affected for good.

New School Project £10,000 including new equipment and decorating the property.
