Kalambya is a village situated in the eastern Provence of Kenya called Kitui County. On average it takes a 3 hours journey on tarmac roads, then a further 30 minutes on unmade roads to get there by car.
I was visiting the village in April this year to take part in a “Vacation Bible Club” A scheme run by our friends from the Children’s Ministry Team when the schools are closed for a months break.
April is the middle of the wet season, when the rains are falling. So reaching the village proved very difficult.. Roads literally became rivers and needed to be forded. When the rains end, the area is described as semi-arid.
When I arrived I was shown an old derelict pump, that hadn’t worked for over 12 months, sited on Church property.
For 6 months the rivers run with water, then the remaining 6 six months the riverbeds are dry.
People travel to collect the water up to 6 kms to the river several times a week.
When no water is visible they dig to the depth of a metre to find standing water, which they then fill their drums from.
Jan and I came back six months later, to open a new pumping system. Using solar power through the day and electricity through the night, it is able to provide around 25,000 lts of water each day. Tanks with the capacity to store 20,000 lts are filled through the night, ready for the steady stream of people who are now able the benefit from drinking and cooking with fresh water from the aquifers 150 mts below ground. Clean, sweet water, that will reduce infections and many other ailments that can be contracted when drinking dirty water.

The celebration that took place that day was wonderful, but as we said many times that day – We want to bounce all the Glory back to God.
