When water is found the first thing is to assess the volume of water it can pump, without damaging the aquifer. This is done by pumping for 24 hours. At the end of this time the correct size of pump can be decided, in this case, 6 cubes per hour,(6000 lits per hour), great result.
During this time the water is freely available to anyone with a container of any kind. Remember water is scarce at Mtito Andei, so to see all this water being pumped out of the ground is breathtaking.
This video is taken early in the 24 hours, lots of barrels to fill. I have video nearer the end of the 24 hour pump, only children splashing in the water, enjoying filling an occasional drum because all available drums and containers are full!
At the end of this period of time the temporary pump is removed and the well temporally blocked so the structure to hold the 4 x 10,000 lit tanks can be built. We estimate that by the 22nd of this month or at the latest the 1st August the well will be pumping that much needed water to the people of Mtito Andei. One Well drilled, three to go.
Around 20 miles away the people of Nthunguni are in a similar position as Mtito. The only difference is they can collect water from the river a couple of miles from the town, but the water is dirty, carrying many water borne diseases including typhoid, cholera. In this place we have land allocated ready to start work. As of today (12/7) we still need another 30K of the 45K required to start the project.
